What Is an Equipment Grounding Conductor?
An equipment grounding conductor is a wire that connects exposed metal parts of electrical equipment to the grounding system. It provides a low-resistance path for fault current, helping protective devices disconnect power when energized metal contacts the equipment enclosure. It normally carries no current during proper operation.

Key Takeaways About Equipment Grounding Conductor
- It connects equipment enclosures to the grounding system.
- It normally carries current only during a fault.
- It is not the same as a neutral conductor.
How Equipment Grounding Conductor Works

An equipment grounding conductor connects metal enclosures, raceways, and other noncurrent-carrying parts to the electrical grounding system. Under normal conditions, the conductor does not supply power to the equipment. If a damaged wire energizes an enclosure, the grounding path carries fault current back toward the source.

That fault-current path helps the circuit breaker or fuse respond and disconnect the affected circuit. Electricians check the conductor for a continuous connection and inspect its terminations at equipment, junction points, and the panelboard. The conductor may be a separate wire, or the grounding function may be provided through an approved metal raceway. The neutral conductor serves a different role because it normally carries return current from loads.

From the GMB Electric team
When we handle Electrical Code Correction work, we trace the equipment grounding conductor through the circuit and inspect its connections at the panel, boxes, and equipment. We also check continuity and look for loose, damaged, or disconnected grounding paths that could affect protective device operation.
Equipment Grounding Conductor in Practice: A Real-World Example
A metal junction box has a loose grounding connection after wiring changes. During an Electrical Code Correction visit, we inspect the grounding conductor, repair the termination, and verify continuity through the affected circuit.
