What Is a Busbar?

A busbar is a conductive metal strip or bar that distributes electrical power among connected circuits inside equipment such as a panelboard. Busbars provide a common connection point for breakers or other conductors. Their size, material, insulation, and mounting arrangement must suit the panel design and the electrical load.

Key Takeaways About Busbar

  • Busbars create shared connection points inside electrical equipment.
  • A busbar is not the same as a circuit breaker.
  • Damage can appear as heat, discoloration, looseness, or arcing.

How Busbar Works

A busbar carries electrical current through a panel and provides shared connection points for circuit conductors. A main incoming conductor energizes the bar, while breakers connect to it and route power into branch circuits. The panel assembly keeps these connections aligned and supported.

Busbars may serve ungrounded conductors, the neutral system, or grounding connections, depending on the panel design. A panelboard can contain more than one bar, with each bar serving a different electrical function. Technicians inspect the bar for secure connections, heat damage, corrosion, and signs of arcing. A damaged mounting point or loose connection can affect several circuits at once.

From the GMB Electric team

When we inspect a busbar, we check its connections, mounting points, insulation, and visible condition. We also look for heat marks, corrosion, or damage around breaker terminals. Our team compares the busbar arrangement with the panel design before tightening, repairing, or recommending replacement work.

Busbar in Practice: A Real-World Example

A residential panel may have a busbar that supplies several branch circuit breakers from the main power connection. If one connection shows heat damage, the repair may involve inspecting the related breaker, conductor, and busbar together.
