What Is a Photocell?

A photocell is an electrical light sensor that detects surrounding brightness and controls a connected lighting circuit. Outdoor security lights commonly use photocells to switch on at dusk and switch off at dawn. The sensor helps automate lighting without a wall switch or timer, provided the fixture and wiring support photocell control.

Key Takeaways About Photocell

  • A photocell responds to ambient light, not motion.
  • Placement affects how reliably the sensor detects dusk and dawn.
  • Photocells are often confused with motion sensors.

How Photocell Works

A photocell contains a light-sensitive component that changes its electrical behavior as ambient light changes. The control circuit reads that change and switches the connected light on when the area becomes dark. As daylight returns, the circuit switches the light off.

Photocell performance depends on sensor placement and the light reaching its sensing surface. A nearby fixture can shine into the sensor and affect its reading. A fixture aimed at a wall, soffit, or open yard may need a sensor position that sees general outdoor brightness without receiving direct light from the controlled lamp. Security lighting often pairs a photocell with a separate motion sensor when both dusk-to-dawn operation and activity-based illumination are needed.

From the GMB Electric team

When we install or troubleshoot a photocell, we check the sensor position, wiring, fixture compatibility, and the light reaching the sensing surface. We also test the connected security lighting under changing light conditions or with an appropriate diagnostic method. Our team looks for nearby lamps that could cause unwanted switching.

Photocell in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants a driveway security light to operate from dusk until dawn without adjusting a switch each evening. A photocell mounted where it can read outdoor light can control that fixture automatically.
